22Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (Heb 10:)

"I want full assurance that this pill will take off 200 pounds in three weeks or I won't buy it."

"Well, sir, perhaps if you exercise rigorously and diet carefully along with the pills...."

"I don't want none of that. No exercise, no dieting. I just want to get skinny. Can you give me that assurance or not?"

"Well, sir. You give me the $3,000 and I will give you whatever assurance you want."


It's man's nature to want, even demand assurance for whatever he does or buys. He wants to make sure his efforts and money are well spent. This is why he will spend as much for insurance on a product he is buying as he will for the product itself.

For whatever a person wants, there are plenty of people ready and anxious to supply it. This is especially true with insurance (assurance). If you doubt this, take a look in the phone book under "Insurance" or watch your mailbox for insurance junk mail.

It's obvious that someone is making a profit somewhere - and supposedly it's you.

The world is overflowing with people out to get all they want without having to do anything for it. And that is never more true than in affluent countries like the USA.

I live in a small town - or at least it was a small town until it decided to grow and bring in the rich and the elderly, for which the town advertised.

Immediately the town grew - mostly from the criminal element and the homeless and the beggars who were keeping an eye on the ads for where the rich and the elderly congregated.

There is always someone who wants to take advantage of those who wish to take the most for themselves.

And that is never more true than in the church realm.

Many "churches" have been started for no other purpose than to extract the contents of their member's wallets. But even within the sliding scale of the "legitimate" churches there is an underlying element of the same. The churches, too often, rather than remembering that they are servants of the Lord, believe that it is their job to convert the World; that they are not only to be the "Planters" and the "Waterers" of the Word, but to force the plant into rapid, though sickly, growth.

This can be seen in the huge cathedrals from the past. But not the past only. Even now small churches hardly large enough to fill a living room spend great amounts of money building huge churches for their expected "future growth."

"Church" has become a competitive thing, and is leaning father and farther in that direction day by day. And as the churches become more competitive, they take on more of the strategies of the World they wish to glean their growth from.

Many years ago I heard a Pastor say that he was instructed by a well known Evangelist on the tricks he needed to use to insure the growth of his ministry. They were the same tricks used by businesses and corporations to get their "product" on the top of the heap.

And today as I was perusing the web I came across a site that announced in big letters that they had "Strategies" available for winning souls. This is not new - almost all churches teach strategies for winning souls. They learn them from the business experts of the World.

Strategies to bring them in.

I think of the carnival hawkers who stands at the door of a darkened room and announces to the world what a wonderful time they will have if they pay their money and enter his room.

And I think of the man who advertised a book entitled; "All I know about making a million dollars." All he knew was how to sell a book with empty pages because he knew nothing more about making a million dollars than that there were plenty of people willing to spend good money to learn tricks, rather than earn what they want.

The churches have an advantage over businesses of the world. In the world you can learn immediately if what you have purchased is any good or not. In the church, however, much of what you are to attain is supposed to be supplied after you die. By that time it's a little late to demand your money back if you find it too hot for you in the "Paradise" you had been promised.

And for the more immediate blessings you are supposed to receive, if you do not receive them, you are told it is because you did not hold your mouth right when you prayed for that new Cadillac, or you did not work up enough faith within yourself to be healed of that amputated arm.

Whereas a business may fail if their product proves to be inferior, a church does not suffer such problems because they can always blame you the practitioner, or the devil, or even God if no one else is found to accept the blame.

The church is not the only one who uses strategies to bring people into the sheepfold. Jesus also used strategies. Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and fed the multitudes. This brought the people in by the droves. Then as clincher He would tell them to eat His flesh and to drink His blood. Then to those who remained He said they would suffer great shame and loss and eventually die because they chose to remain.

The method Jesus used was just the opposite of what the churches use. The churches promise prosperity, and health, and a blissful life here on earth. They promise that the more you do for yourself, the more God will bless you, and the more God blesses you, the more you can know that you are one of His and that He loves you.

Blessed Assurance.

Jesus used a different "strategy." Everything Jesus did was outward, for others. He did nothing for Himself but offer Himself as a sacrifice on the cross. His loss was His great gain. And Jesus taught that our loss would be our great gain.

Then the strategy Jesus used to build His Church (body of believers) was not to build a bigger building, in fact He had no building whatever accept perhaps a borrowed upper room for a short period. His strategy was to beat his followers off with a stick ("drink my blood"), and those who remained, He trained and prepared to be sacrificial soldiers rather than royal celebrities. In other words, He trained them to be just like Himself.

Assurance is something we seek, and naturally so. We want to know that we are on the right track. We want to be assured that we are on the road to Paradise, even though all around us is nothing but sage brush and cactus plants. We want some one, any one to promise us that we can have what we want even though we have made no effort to attain that which we desire.

So there are churches ready with the answer we desire. Not all churches, mind you, but many.

Where does the doctrine of Assurance come from? Is it Biblical?

All church doctrine is "Biblical." It may have no more foundation than a half a verse that has been warped and mangled, but it is unlikely that you can find a doctrine that does not claim that it is based on the Bible.

Most doctrines, like that of Assurance, has a much broader Biblical base. However, whatever a person chooses to believe, there is usually overwhelming evidence against it in the Bible as well. That is why there are so many doctrines and denominations and cults in this world. People are looking for the Truth, but they will anxiously settle for a quick and easy Truth; not an enduring Truth that takes much investigation, frustration and the leadership of the Holy Spirit to discern.

Assurance is a concept started by the writings of St. Augustine of Hippo. These writings were then accepted and incorporated into the doctrines of such notable people as John Calvin, John Wesley, and Martin Luther. So if you belong to the Lutheran, Methodist or one of the many churches that follow Calvinism, you are doubtless aware and fully instructed in the doctrine of Assurance.

The doctrine of Assurance, also known as "Security" or "Confidence" does not stand alone. In fact it goes hand-in-hand with the doctrine of "Saved by Grace Alone." It is difficult to separate the two. Because of this, if your Faith is an adherent of Grace Alone, it is most likely a follower of Assurance.

In opposition to Assurance, and therefore Grace Alone, is the doctrine of what is called by many "Lordship Salvation," or "Perseverance of the Saints," not to be confused with "Final Perseverance of the Saints" which is sometimes called "Preservation of the Saints" where Salvation is retained in spite of ourselves. [Confused? Me too!] This doctrine, that is "Lordship" states that one can lose their Salvation if they do not endure to the end. This means that a person who wishes to retreat back into the world, that is to take back the reins of their life, may do so. Whereas Grace and Assurance state that once you are converted you have no more choices but rather are now "Infilled" with the Holy Spirit who cannot under any circumstances be withdrawn from you.

In other words, your Assurance is not based on anything you can do, but rather based on what God has done, and will continue to do through Eternity.

This is reassuring to be sure. Now let us investigate the Scriptures that are used as support for this reassurance.

[ Remember, there is always a myriad of Scripture that refutes whatever position we try to establish and stand on. This creates and continues the Mystery that confounds the minds of man, and reinforces the need for the Holy Spirit in order to unravel the mystery.]

1John 5:13 13These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1John 2:1 1My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous

John 10:27-30 27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30I and my Father are one.

John 5:24 24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Rom 8: 31-39 31What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34Who is he that condemneth? Heb 7:25 25Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Heb 13:5 5Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

1Pet 1:4-5 4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Jude 1:24 24Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

2Tim 2: 13If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

Advocates of Assurance understand all of the above Scriptures to be admonishing unfaithful but truly saved people to live their lives as an example to others, and advocates of Lordship salvation add that these passages appear to demand holiness as an essential part of being a Christian.

PROBLEM VERSES

The following portions of Scripture are considered "Problem" verses by the proponents of Assurance. Consider them and see if they present any problem to you.

[ I have added bold to some text, either because it is primarily a proof Scripture, or because it is in contrast to what is trying to be proved, or sometimes to point out what could have been used as support as well. I have also left surrounding and applicable text in order that you can see the context of the Scripture.]

Those who support the Assurance doctrine concede that there are portions of Scripture which are difficult to squeeze into their assumed position. The following are some examples they admit to. I find it "odd" that the opponents to this doctrine have been able to find many more verses than those the proponents admit to, and that I have been able, without much effort, to find many more besides, but, that's the way things go, I guess.

This first example from Hebrews 6: (to me) seems quite frightening if I were to depend on it as my excuse for slothful behavior as I stand before the Great White Throne where "dead branches" are being tosses into a pit of fire and brimstone. But the adherents to the Assurance doctrine contend that it is not Salvation that is being spoken of here, but rather the maturity of the saint.

The proof text that follows (John 15:) they say is again not speaking of the person being burned, but the rewards for good conduct that the Lord has promised the Faithful for good works (Treasures in Heaven is what I assume they mean). Before I risk this interpretation I want to make sure I have lots of sunburn lotion at hand. But that's me; see what you make of it.

Heb 6:1-12 (Assurance advocates say it refers to maturity)

1Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3And this will we do, if God permit. 4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. 7For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: 8But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
9But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

John 15:1-15 (Advocates Say this means losing reward when burned, not the person)

1I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Heb 10:26-31 26For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

1Cor 9:24-27 24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 5He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Col 1:21-23 21And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Here in Romans 2 the Lordship doctrine sees Paul as referring to the Sanctification process, while the Assurance doctrine sees him talking about the lost state of man.
Jesus said that Scripture is written in such a way as to confuse the carnal mind. Are you confused? (Luke 8, Isa 28:13-15)

Rom 8:5-8 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

1Cor 6:9-10 6Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. Acts 10:44-48 44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

I find that Theologians and just about anyone else who tries to be "right" or just explores one side of a wall either develops tunnel vision, or else they only explore one aspect of a subject because they have tunnel vision.

Very often when I read what a theologian uses to support their view, right next to it, or very near it is another Scripture that clearly nullifies what they are trying to support; or even stranger, it is a verse that is an even better support for their position than the one they were pushing forward.

And speaking of verses, I notice how very little Scripture is presented, or at least as little as absolutely possible. Often all that is presented is one single verse, and on occasion only a portion of a verse.

I have often wondered if this is in consideration of our (the readers) eyesight, or if they have a limited amount of ink or paper. But the fact that they have written (at times) several volumes of their own words to try and explain that half a verse causes me to doubt this to be the case.

It kind of reminds me of a two hour movie that has spent so much time in the development of the plot, that they only have a minute or two to show what everyone has been waiting for - the fulfilment of the plot.

And some times I wonder if it's not a lot like Junior who when asked if he washed his hands gladly thrusts out his spotless left hand while he hold his right hand containing the mud ball behind his back. Or more to the point, the used car salesman who sheepishly points out and discounts for the balding tire, while covering up the fact that the transmission is on its last legs. Or the magicians who force a card on his audience in order to prove he is able to read minds.

I also find it quite interesting that as I investigate the different sources of information that supports one view or another, they seem to have different verses they use to back up their beliefs than do others of the same belief. It's as if they don't investigate what any one else has to say about their subject of interest, but rather only go by what they happen to find laying in front of them.

I think of the cults that go door to door with five worn-out pages in their Bible they use to "prove" their doctrine, and the rest of the Bible is as pristine as the day it came off the press.

It is my belief that to find the Truth (something I wonder if very many people are actually looking for) I have to check out every source I can find, put them all together like a jigsaw puzzle, and then tear it all up and rearrange the pieces to see of they will fit yet another way. I find I can't leave pieces out, or whittle them down to size, or turn them around and paint them to match the picture I think the puzzle is supposed to be. After all this (and during) I check with the Creator of the puzzle, the Holy Spirit, who might or might not aid me in my exploration. Then when I am all through, and I either exhaust my resources or just plain give up - I assume I still don't have the Truth, but rather just (hopefully) a working knowledge of the subject.

This said, I have taken the above support Scriptures for Assurance and added some of the surrounding verses that may add clarity to their true meaning. (Take note that some verses have been left out.)

Rom 11:29 1I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.

4But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

7What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded 8(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

14If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

John 10:27-30 26But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30I and my Father are one.

Philip 1:6 6Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Rom 8:31-39 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. 26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

If God be for us, who can be against us? 32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rom 6:15-22 1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 5:9-10 8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life..

19For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

[ In my mind this is the strongest support verse for the Assurance doctrine. But in order to keep things in perspective, we must consider who is being referred to when promises are made. It is quite clear that in all these Scriptures it is either stated or assumed that the person spoken to has received the Holy Spirit, whatever that might entail since there are numerous theories regarding what is required to receive the Holy Spirit. In this Scripture everyone who says "I Do" seems to be included. But if we go back to the letter's introduction we find:

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, (Eph 1:)

So it appears that Paul is speaking to those who are "Faithful" (not "carnal Christians") and to those "Predestined," which is a concept contrary to the doctrine of None Traditional Assurance, and is, in fact, a position that is supported by the Traditional doctrine. "O, what a tangled web we weave..." ]

Below I have inserted a portion of text from Wikipedia (an excellent source on any subject). I believe it is important information for understanding this doctrinal quagmire, and since I could have not said it better, and in fact I could not have said it at all since most of it I can't figure out, I thought it best to just present it and let you do what you will with it.

In general," proponents of the doctrine of perseverance interpret such passages, which that encourage the church community to persevere in the faith but seem to indicate that some members of the community might fall away, as hortatory rather than objective in character. That is, they view the prophets and apostles as writing "from the human perspective," in which the members of the elect are unknowable and all should "work out [their] own salvation" (Philippians 2:12) and "make [their] calling and election sure" (2 Peter 1:10), rather than "from the divine perspective," in which those who will persevere, according to Calvinism, are well known. The primary objection to this approach is that it might equally be said that these difficult passages bear the objective meaning while the passages urged to support this doctrine of perseverance are hortatory in a positive sense, revealing God's perpetual grace towards believers.

The primary objection lodged against the doctrine is that such teaching will lead to license. That is, objectors contend that if people know they can never lose their salvation they will feel free to sin without fear of eternal consequences.

Traditional Calvinists contend that this charge is justly leveled against the non-tradition doctrine, which doesn't see sanctification as a necessary component of salvation, and in the controversy over Lordship salvation, traditional Calvinists argued against the proponents of the non-traditional doctrine. Traditional Calvinists, and many other non-Calvinist evangelicals, posit that a truly converted heart will necessarily follow after God and live in accordance with his precepts, though perfection is not achievable, struggles with sin will continue, and some temporary "backsliding" may occur.


During my studies I have found many other verses that I consider applicable to this subject that, for reasons beyond my comprehension, have not been included in the "proofs" listed above. I have included some of them here for you to check out.

Here are a couple more Scriptures that I find apropos. (That's my fancy word for the day. I just wish I knew what it meant.)

Does any of this gobbledygook make sense to me? Not by a long shot. Nor do I believe it makes any sense to those who support one view over another. The advantage I have is I am able to admit that I don't know what God's intentions are, and that I am just a seeker of understanding. These "Theologian" experts must have answers, rather than questions, so they are unable to keep there minds open to that which is contrary to their own established belief.

To me all this is just a bunch of foolish talk, including my own opinion, and has little or nothing to do with "Truth."

For Truth, we must go to the source of Truth, and that is the Writer of the Book we are exploring. And, I find, that the Holy Spirit only reveals tiny parts of the Bible at a time to me, just enough to get me over the next wall that is confronting me.

After I pass a wall, I may or I may not have any understanding of the wall I have overcome (or at least passed over), because I only saw it briefly and from one side. I don't hang around the wall and explore it once I have passed it. Of course, that is not absolutely true, because I am exploring walls here and now. But here my intent is not as much to understand the walls as it is to learn what I need to know in order to tackle the next wall. I'm trying to learn from my mistakes, if you will. Also, as I have stated often before, I want to help you understand that the walls we are looking at are often man-made, as well as to see our need to overcome them, not stand around and look at them as we are so often instructed to do.

Especially this wall of doing nothing called "Assurance."

My conclusion on this entire quagmire is that it means nothing at all. Whatever a person does or doesn't do adds up to nothing at all. It's like a person baking a cake - he or she can interpret the instructions however they want, and they can add or subtract whatever they want to; but if they don't add the yeast to the mix, it won't rise, and if they try to avoid the "fire," it just won't bake.

Part of the Doctrine of Perseverance, at least the Traditional view, is that those who are destined to be one of the "elect," God chose from the beginning of the world to be Saved, and the rest of mankind is destined to burn in hell forever.

To me this view is like one of those riddles that has to be carefully thought out, and when you finally have the riddle solved, you wonder if it was worth the time and the effort you spent on it.

For one thing, if this concept is accepted, then it would mean there is no "free will" at all. This goes entirely cockeyed to the many times that Jesus has left that door wide open with "Whosoever Will." Are there those who are chosen? Obviously. Look at Paul if no one else. He certainly wasn't one trying to jump the line in order to be a disciple of Jesus.

Another aspect of the Predestination doctrine in relation to Assurance is that because God knows ahead of time who will and who will not fall away from the faith, He has made it impossible for that person to do anything but succeed. Again, that does away with Free Will. It also does away with any form of Assurance, since if God knows you will finally come back to the Faith, then He is not keeping you from failing, nor is He manipulating circumstances whereby you will be ultimately saved - He has already seen that you would have been saved because of your own nature. And if God can't see ahead of time that you would be saved, but He keeps you in line till the finish because you have accepted the Holy Spirit, who by this reasoning is unable to leave you, then that does away with God's Omniscience, and therefore Predestination.

And according to the Assurance doctrine, a carnal (and in fact a wretched sinner) Christian who has said a few words in the beginning is going to be just as saved as Paul and Abraham and the Apostles. In other words, nothing we can do or won't do will make any difference, except limit our "rewards." Say the words and take a bath and you are saved forever. Miss a step in the beginning and you are doomed to the pit of hell forever along with the Mother Teresa's of the world (or other denominations than your own) who might not have gotten the words or the order of rituals just right. Sounds fair, doesn't it?


But regardless of all the above, which is likely nothing but a headache to you, as it is to me; if God knows you are going to make it, or if you are not going to make it - how can that possibly give you any sense of Assurance since God could just as easily have you on the list for hell as He does in His Book of Life.

Another aspect I wonder about; if I were in an Army of soldiers who considered themselves fit and fully prepared because they made it through the induction center, but were nothing more than couch potatoes, or even the vilest of criminals - how much assurance would I have of survival should my unit be called to battle? I would want to stand side-by-side with the mightiest and most dedicated of soldiers, and to know that I stood with them because I was one of them. And I, personally, believe this is what the Lord is calling for, and demanding we become.

As for me, I feel much more confident not having the confidence that comes from the "Assurance" doctrine.

[Does it seem as if I don't want to have assurance of my Salvation? Sure I do. But I want that Assurance to come from knowing I am in the Will of God, not by counting on a few verses that have been wrenched from Scripture. It is the same as if I had a job that the Labor Union told me that, once I had put in my trial period, I could slack off all I want and the company couldn't fire me. That would not be much assurance to me. I would much rather have the assurance of job security that comes from doing such a good job that the company, even if it sold and moved, would want to keep me on because of my being a valuable asset to them. If that sounds like I am advocating "works,' you haven't read many of my other studies. But if I hired a plumber, and in spite of his great reputation and low charge, slacked off and didn't do the job; I wouldn't call on him again. Would you? I wonder about God?]
